Finnish Special Education in Africa
A web design project aimed at streamlining user experience and increasing donations for a Finnish non-profit organization.
Helsinki, Finland
The Problem
The Finnish Special Education in Africa (FSEA) website needed a modern redesign to improve usability, accessibility, and engagement. The existing site lacked a concise menu structure and a clear CTA, making it difficult for users to navigate and access key information about the organization’s initiatives.
Understanding the Challenges
When I started this project, I knew I had to address several critical challenges:
1. Limited Accessibility
The site needed to comply with WCAG guidelines to effectively serve users with functional diversity. This included implementing alt text for images to enhance screen reader compatibility, and including both Finnish and English translations of the site to support different audiences.
2. Confusing Navigation
I had to create a clear information architecture to make it easy for users to find services and resources.
3. Non-Responsive Design
With a significant portion of traffic expected from mobile devices, ensuring mobile optimization was crucial.
My Role
As the sole designer on the project, I led the website redesign by collaborating with the organization's founders, conducting user research, and improving the site’s overall user experience. I restructured content for clarity, enhanced accessibility, and worked on a major rebrand for FSEA. Additionally, I made sure accessibility was a top priority and optimized the site for mobile responsiveness.
